Another Santa Cruz Getaway

Last month, we were invited to stay with some friends while they house-sat in Santa Cruz.  Lucky us!  And even though we were only able to get away for a few days, we couldn't turn to down an opportunity to go back after we had such a great trip last year.  And being back in the world of paying rent, the price was right. :)

We were lucky enough to arrive on Farmers Market day and we basically stopped at the house long enough to grab our friends and go downtown...  One of my favorite things to do is to visit various farmers markets, and this one didn't disappoint.

Afterwards we drove to - where else?! - the beach!  We hung out on a beach near the cliffs and the surfing museum, then made a pit-stop on the wharf to the candy shop where the kids got to pick out some treats, and then decided for dinner we'd head to Capitola for Pizza My Heart.  Yum!  It was so much fun to teach Z how to "fold" his pizza, and to watch him dig holes and run in the sand.  We stayed long enough to get some beautiful light and some of my favorite pics from the trip.  Way too many to post individually, so enjoy the collage!

We spent another day mostly at the beach, but this time we found some tide pools to explore.  It was a beautiful beach day... a nice warm breeze and cool waters.  Not that we spent a lot of time in the water this time around.  Z was a little fearful of the big waves crashing against the cliffs, so we explored the tide pools at a safe distance and spent a good amount of time in the sand.

That afternoon we needed to wind down a bit so we took off on our own and drove around... we ended up at the museum of natural history. It was one of the places we wanted to check out last time, but didn't have time. We had about 45 minutes before they closed which was just long enough to check out the small museum and do a little digging before heading back to the house.

We took a day trip to Monterey where we did a little exploring at the Aquarium, and a little playing at Dennis the Menace park again.  The kids had a blast!

We left early the next morning... we had a date to meet Z's preschool teacher and her husband at the San Francisco Zoo!  The little guy was SO excited.  We were early, so we went to Fort Funton to kill some time and found a cool old bunker and little secret trails to explore.

We spent a good 4 or 5 hours at the zoo... it never gets old. : )

For a short vacation, it was very rewarding.  We actually spent more time doing less, and less time squeezing everything in, so we got the best of both worlds between our last trip and this one.  My only nagging regret is that we didn't spend a day on the Boardwalk like I had hoped... Z-man clocked in at 42.5 inches at his last checkup... which means he's big enough to be my roller coaster buddy on more than just the kiddie rides!!!  We've gotta take advantage of my little spout's growth spurt here pretty soon!
